This cardigan style jacket is made from a vintage Furisode Kimono. Furisodé Kimono are the most decadent type of Kimono worn by unmarried women on formal occasions. The Kanji for Furisodé 振袖 literally translates to shake/ swing and sleeves. Furisodé Kimonos are often brightly colored with gold accents, and the long sleeves swing round and round as the woman walks, a clear advertisement that she is available for marriage.
The weave is called Chirimen 縮緬 a traditional Japanese weaving technique developed in the late 16th century. The weft threads are tighter than the warp threads during weaving process, which gives the fabric unique texture. This is a lightweight Chirimen with a lovely drape.
