Indigo Asanoha Kimono Jacket XL

$400.00

This cardigan style jacket is made from vintage Tsumugi Kimono silk. Tsumugi 紬 yarns are made from irregular-shaped cocoons called Kuzumayu, which were once considered not fit for spinning even, fine silk threads. Compared to the shine of ordinary silk fabric, Tsumugi has a matte surface. Containing naturally formed slubs, Tsumugi yarns are durable, yet lightweight. Historically, Tsumugi was worn by farmers, samurai and merchants as casual wear. Although Tsumugi was once thought of as a sub-par textile, it is now highly sought after by Japanese Kimono connoisseurs.

Aizomé 藍染 or Japanese Indigo is derived from the Persicaria Tinctoria plant, and has long been revered for its beautiful hues and antibacterial properties. From plant to dye, it takes about a year to produce, which includes a fermentation process. Different shades of blue are produced by adjusting the fermentation time. Aizomé, which has been perfected since before the 16th century has now become synonymous with Japanese textile design.

This Kimono features the Asanoha motif. 麻の葉 read “Asa no ha” means leaf of hemp. It is an ancient Japanese motif that is common in textile design, ceramics as well as woodwork such as intricate Kumiko. As hemp is a strong plant that grows quickly, Asanoha represents resilience and growth.

This jacket is cut extra long and has longer sleeves for men and taller people, which can be worn cuffed. The armholes and sleeves are also cut wider to accommodate larger arm sizes. It features two patch pockets and an extra wide collar that can be folded open for extra coverage.

Garment Flat Lay Measurements
Width: 72cm / 28.5 inches
Center to sleeve: 82 / 32.5 inches
Length: 95cm / 37.5 inches

100% silk
