Kuro Tomesodé 黒留袖 is considered the highest ranking Kimono for married women and are customarily worn for formal occasions such as weddings. This Tomesodé is hand painted in the Yūzen 友禅 style, a Japanese resist dyeing technique using rice-paste, which may be drawn freehand or applied by stencil, and the the paste keeps the dye areas separated. The technique was named after Miyazaki Yūzen, a famous 17th century fan painter.
Cranes play an important role in Japanese folklore as characters representing sacrifice and loyalty, they are said to live one thousand years and symbolize long life.
