Asanoha Indigo Top

$150.00

This top is made with Japanese indigo textiles. Japanese Indigo or 藍染 Aizomé is derived from the Persicaria Tinctoria plant, and has long been revered for its beautiful hues and antibacterial properties. From plant to dye, it takes about a year to produce, which includes a fermentation process as well as a chemical reaction with oxygen, which creates the vibrant blue color. Aizomé, which has been perfected since before the 16th century has now become synonymous with Japanese textiles.

The top section is made from a vintage indigo dyed Yukata with the Asanoha pattern. Asanoha 麻の葉 means leaf of hemp and is an ancient Japanese motif that is common in textile design, ceramics as well as woodwork such as intricate Kumiko. As hemp is a strong plant that grows quickly, Asanoha represents resilience and growth. The bottom portion is indigo cotton dyed and woven in a small fifth generation mill in Hiroshima prefecture.

Each top is made to order. Available in sizes Small to XX Large. This is a relaxed fit top meant to be worn with plenty of ease (approx 25cm / 10 in)
