This cardigan style jacket is made from a vintage Tsumugi Kimono featuring Yabané 矢羽根 motif, which represents the fin of an arrow, often made of bird feather. There is an old saying, “An arrow shot, never returns.” In the Edo period, it was customary for young women to wear this motif so once married, they would not return.
The patterns are created from a hand weaving process called Kasuri 絣. Kasuri is a term for textiles that have been woven with threads that are dyed specifically to create patterns in the fabric as they come together in the weaving process. It requires a tremendous amount of planning as threads have to be pre-painted exactly to achieve the final pattern. It’s characterized by slightly blurred or brushed appearance, the beautiful mark of imperfections in hand-weaving.
