This top is made from a vintage Furisode Kimono. Furisodé Kimono are the most decadent type of Kimono worn by unmarried women on formal occasions. The Kanji for Furisodé 振袖 literally translates to shake/ swing and sleeves. Furisodé Kimonos are often brightly colored with gold accents, and the long sleeves swing round and round as the woman walks, a clear advertisement that she is available for marriage.
Traditionally, Kimonos are constructed from narrow bolts of silk that are cut into eight rectangular pieces, then folded and overlapped to fit the body. At any time, the pieces can be taken apart and sewn back together to accommodate size changes. This method of construction does not produce any waste. As a nod to this zero-waste philosophy, this top is made using the full width of Kimono fabric and features a rounded neckline.
