Furisodé Kimono are the most decadent type of Kimono worn by unmarried women on formal occasions. The Kanji for Furisodé 振袖 literally translates to shake/ swing and sleeves. Furisodé Kimonos are often brightly colored with gold accents, and the long sleeves swing round and round as the woman walks, a clear advertisement that she is available for marriage.
This Furisode is hand painted in the Yūzen 友禅 style, a Japanese resist dyeing technique using rice-paste, which may be drawn freehand or applied by stencil, and the the paste keeps the dye areas separated.
