Black Shibori Striped Tunic
This top is made from a vintage Shibori Kimono. Shibori 総絞り is a traditional hand tie-dye technique. Each dot is tied by hand before the textile is dipped in dye—then each dot is untied manually. Because of the enormous amount of labor that goes into Shibori, it is considered a high end textile.
Traditionally, Kimonos are constructed from narrow bolts of silk that are cut into eight rectangular pieces, then folded and overlapped to fit the body. At any time, the pieces can be taken apart and sewn back together to accommodate size changes. This method of construction does not produce any waste. As a nod to this zero-waste philosophy, the main part of this tunic is made using the full width of Kimono silk.
