This dress is made from a vintage Kimono with Asanoha motif. 麻の葉 read “Asa no ha” means leaf of hemp. It is an ancient Japanese motif that is common in textile design, ceramics as well as woodwork such as intricate Kumiko. As hemp is a strong plant that grows quickly, Asanoha represents resilience and growth.
Traditionally, Kimonos are constructed from narrow bolts of silk that are cut into eight rectangular pieces, then folded and overlapped to fit the body. At any time, the pieces can be taken apart and sewn back together to accommodate weight fluctuations, or if the Kimono is passed onto another person with different height.
