Sho-Chiku-Bai Furisode Kimono Dress (Small)

$400.00

This dress is made from a vintage Furisode Kimono. Furisodé Kimono are the most decadent type of Kimono worn by unmarried women on formal occasions. The Kanji for Furisodé #振袖 literally translates to shake/ swing and sleeves. Furisodé Kimonos are often brightly colored with gold accents, and the long sleeves swing round and round as the woman walks, a clear advertisement that she is available for marriage.

The design features cranes. Cranes play an important role in Japanese folklore as characters representing sacrifice and loyalty, they are said to live one thousand years and symbolize long life. It also features Sho-Chiku-Bai - 松竹梅 an auspicious triumvirate of pine, bamboo and plum. These three plants are considered powerful because pine and bamboo remain green year-round and plum is among the first trees to flower in the spring. Together these elements represent the attributes of longevity (pine), scholarly and pure spirit (plum), and flexibility (bamboo).

This below-knee length dress has long sleeves, a mock neckline with princess seams throughout that flares out at the skirt. A unique design.
