This bag is made from a patchwork of vintage Kurume Kasuri Samues—jackets traditionally worn by farmers. The solid blues are from vintage Tsumugi Kimono silks. Kurume Kasuri 久留米絣 is an old technique dating back more than 200 years. The designs feature simple motifs created in the Kasuri weaving process, and indigo dyes on a thick cotton weave. With its rich history, Kurume Kasuri is designated an intangible cultural property of Japan.

The patterns are created from a hand weaving process called Kasuri 絣. Kasuri is a term for textiles that have been woven with threads that are dyed specifically to create patterns in the fabric as they come together in the weaving process. It requires a tremendous amount of planning as threads have to be pre-painted exactly to achieve the final pattern. It’s characterized by slightly blurred or brushed appearance, the beautiful mark of imperfections in hand-weaving.

This bag is lined with vintage Yukata cotton and has one inside pocket. The textile is reinforced with a quilting batting, giving the bag a slightly poofy appearance and feel. Magnetic snap closure. Each side features a different design!
