This is a vintage Furisodé Kimono featuring Umé 梅 or plum blossoms. Plum trees were initially introduced to Japan from China and were considered ornamental trees intended for the gardens of the nobility and public spaces. Associated with good fortune, plum blossoms, plums, and the trees are thought to ward off evil. They are often planted around shrines, temples and other spiritual areas.

Furisodé Kimono are the most decadent type of Kimono worn by unmarried women on formal occasions. The Kanji for Furisodé #振袖 literally translates to shake/ swing and sleeves. Furisodé Kimonos are often brightly colored with gold accents, and the long sleeves swing round and round as the woman walks, a clear advertisement that she is available for marriage.
