This top is made from a vintage Furisode Kimono. Furisodé Kimono are the most decadent type of Kimono worn by unmarried women on formal occasions. The Kanji for Furisodé 振袖 literally translates to shake/ swing and sleeves. Furisodé Kimonos are often brightly colored with gold accents, and the long sleeves swing round and round as the woman walks, a clear advertisement that she is available for marriage.

This Furisode Kimono features gorgeous hand painted cranes. Cranes play an important role in Japanese folklore as characters representing sacrifice and loyalty, they are said to live one thousand years and symbolize long life. The design also features the traditional motif: Sho-Chiku-Bai 松竹梅 an auspicious triumvirate of pine, bamboo and plum. These three plants are considered powerful because pine and bamboo remain green year-round and plum is among the first trees to flower in the spring. Together these elements represent the attributes of longevity (pine), scholarly and pure spirit (plum), and flexibility (bamboo).
