This dress is made from a bolt of vintage Tsumugi Kimono silk. Tsumugi 紬 threads are made from irregular-shaped cocoons called Kuzumayu, which were once considered not fit for spinning even, fine silk threads. Compared to the shine of other silk fabrics, Tsumugi has a matte surface containing naturally formed slubs. Historically, Tsumugi was worn by farmers, samurai and merchants as casual wear. Although Tsumugi was once thought of as a sub-par textile, it's now highly sought after by Japanese Kimono connoisseurs who favor the quiet and subtle beauty of this handwoven silk, that shows the tiny imperfections of a surface created by hand. Lightweight but durable, Tsumugi textiles can withstand a lot of wear.

The patterns are created from a hand weaving process called Kasuri 絣. Kasuri is a term for textiles that have been woven with threads that are dyed specifically to create patterns in the fabric as they come together in the weaving process. It requires a tremendous amount of planning as threads have to be pre-painted exactly to achieve the final pattern. It’s characterized by slightly blurred or brushed appearance, the beautiful mark of imperfections in hand-weaving.

This Kimono features the Asanoha motif. 麻の葉 read “Asa no ha” means leaf of hemp. It is an ancient Japanese motif that is common in textile design, ceramics as well as woodwork such as intricate Kumiko. As hemp is a strong plant that grows quickly, Asanoha represents resilience and growth.

This relaxed-fit dress features an invisible zip in the back and two side pockets.
